Hey man. I’ve been working my hands to the bone trying to figure out what I want to do as a writer. After many crumpled pieces of paper, I’ve finally decided what direction would be optimal for me. I know that I’m mostly writing into the wind at the moment, but this post is to ease newcomers into the shitshow they stumbled on.
For those that are new, my name is Bradley, but I go by Greysyns or Grey online. I have an obsession with both writing and gaming and I’ve been hellbent on making a career out of these passions. I’ve had some mild success with writing in the gaming industry, but I’ve shifted my focus from writing for others to writing for myself.
After about a year of writing professionally, I discovered that my writing was gradually dropping in quality. I did some self-reflection and discovered I had been mostly writing about topics that my heart wasn’t fully invested in. Unfortunately, this reflected poorly on my work and started drowning my dreams of making a living as a writer.
My remedy to this issue is to stop writing content for money. Taking gigs and playing games I'm not interested in (or squeezed to hell) made my writing feel forced. I felt as if I hadn’t discovered my voice yet during those days. Writing feels a lot more relaxed and fun now that I can focus on my craft and not the money side of things. With that being said, Here’s what I’ve been working on.
What is Greysyns?
I used to create content for a living, and now I want to do it for fun. I have plans of making video content on platforms like Youtube and Twitch, but that’s something for ‘future me’ to worry about. I’ll need to upgrade to a better PC to pursue those ideas on those platforms. I think I've finally mapped out everything I can and can’t do with my current setup, which isn’t anywhere near as much as I’d like.
In the meantime, I’ll be writing scripts for videos and gathering topics to use for a podcast. I’m also working on a horror anthology that I'll eventually develop into a physical book. I’m already spreading myself pretty thin working on these alone, but I'll have just enough room to actually do something with my website as well.
The Blog & What’s Coming Soon
I’m trying to keep it simple on the blog, since the last time that I tried to plan out content for it, I ended up getting decision paralysis so bad that I just fucked off for about half of a year. Now that I'm back in a good headspace to write, I’m gonna use the blog as a playground to get some of my WIPs out on here and out of my ‘shit that I need to finish' folder.
I am exhausted from formal writing and using so many SEO keywords that my original work just reads like shit. I’m not doing that on the blog. I don’t want to turn this into a job, I don’t want money from this. I just like writing things, posting them, and then forgetting that it exists. If you happen to find something you like here, then we both win. You get the ramblings of a madman, and I get a tiny hit of ego that someone on the internet found my work and actually read it.
Most of the articles that I've written professionally have been viewed by thousands, but that work didn’t feel like it was mine. There were several rules and guidelines and optimization meta-shit that didn’t make it feel like art anymore. It was hard to find my voice when I was paid to actively suffocate it.
I’ll be working on my game review skills, so I'll be scouring Itch.io for some hidden gems like I had tried to start back in October of last year. I have like four or five half-assed attempts at covering some really good games that deserve some attention under a critical eye. But I'm still working on getting my game reviewer chops. I’ll just have to get used to posting on the blog regularly and take it slow.
Alongside the game reviews, I’ll also be posting snippets from my WIPs that you can check out here for free. I’m looking into different monetization plans for my content down the road, but, I want the best user experience for my viewers. I don't want to bog down my website with a bunch of spam and pop-ups. Nothing is more annoying than a small blog with 2 followers and more advertisements than a porn site. Ew.
Check Back Soon!
I’m finally back into a good work/life balance, so I’ll invest more of my free time by working on more content to post here. This post is mostly just a way of motivating myself to actually sit down and work on my blog since it’ll just be out there in the open, staring at me anytime I check my website.
Once I get the blog up and running, I'll add more functions to the website. I'm thinking about creating a newsletter or other ways for viewers to get updates and other little treats I can come up with.
Anyways, thanks for sticking around for this ramble. I'll be back in a couple of days.
See ya later,
~Greysyns
